An accumulation of stored events throughout the years created the book, I Called Her Nan. The journey from being a daughter-in-law to becoming a mother-in-law did not happen in a day or two. The lessons weren't learned all at one time. The, "I didn't know moments," only came after becoming a mother-in-law myself. Even now, there are more lessons to learn, more "I didn't know moments" to be discovered.
As the years are passing, my daughters-in-law (like myself) are experiencing and learning more about the change of seasons in life, the good, and the challenges that come with the gift of time. Not necessarily lessons about each other, but discovering things about ourselves, which eventually resonates with those around us. With those we love.
Respecting another person for needing to step back or take a break, is learned when you start to walk in someone else's shoes or just simply live and juggle life at any age. The reason or circumstances is part of that person's story and may not be understood by those around them. Once in a while, a time-out is needed. A warm bath, a long walk, or a workout can often be enough. However, there are occasions when more time is needed. A time to retreat, process, and pray through unexpected emotions, especially when life's routine is disrupted or change is imminent. (Even Jesus needed time to step away from everyone to pray).
My mom has dementia, and it's a new feeling for me to work through and learn about. I've been given advice by those who have walked this path themselves. Lovingly they say, "Be part of the world she is experiencing. Meet her where she is. Just love her." I guess this could be a good lesson for us all. To meet people where they are...and just love them unconditionally.
Happy New Year! The Beginning of a Story... what takes place within your new year, will be the story told for years to come.

Cathy,
You have a gift with words. A way of expressing what so many of us feel.
