Meals On Wheels

One of my stops each time I go to Virginia is Chesapeake Regional Medical Center (formally known as Chesapeake General). It's the hospital where my mother-in-law volunteered her time to deliver meals to those who were sick, the elderly, shut-ins, and Veterans. Some folks are unable to do grocery shopping due to an illness, surgery, or finances. Each person's reason for needing this service is unique and private.

Before the book was even off the press, I spoke to the director, and I learned of the individual cost of receiving these meals. Since the book was a reflection of the impact Nan (Babe) had on my life, there couldn't be a better place to donate 10% of the book proceeds, than to Meals On Wheels. In 2020 prior to the release of I Called Her Nan, the first "Fund" at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center Meals on Wheels was created. The Marion Lopes Fund is in memory of my mother-in-law's service to this wonderful program which she served on the board for many years.

The donations help cover those who are overdue in paying their accounts. It's a meal delivered by a volunteer. I remember stories of my father-in-law driving Babe to drop off food. He said she'd go inside and not come back out for 30 minutes, because she sat with them so they wouldn't eat alone.

As the Holidays approach, consider donating DIRECTLY to this wonderful program! It's an easy way to bless someone by paying off their account for the month or providing relief until their next payday.

Even if you don't want or need to purchase a book, you can help the fund grow! I love getting the statements that tell how many meals were provided and sometimes I hear a little of their story. No name, just a thank you.
