Today's blog topic comes from my recent interview on, In The Burbs, May 5, 2021.
One of the questions was, how did my perspective change from being a daughter-in-law as I moved to become a mother-in-law?
My response was that my perspective changed gradually, once I got to know each daughter-in-law. The gradual change allowed me the time to understand each of them better. It taught me to step back as I remembered being a young wife and mother starting my home and family the way I wanted to. Stepping back gave the girls the opportunity to ask me questions versus me offering unwanted advice. This still holds true to this today!
Each of my daughters-in-law wrote in the book. They expressed how they saw me as the boyfriend's mom, then as their mother-in-law.
(Here's a Sneak peek into Chapter 13-The Girls Tell Their Story)
Danielle: "As I spent more time with the Lopes family, I began to notice I was frustrated, annoyed, and angry towards my mother-in-law."
Megan: "Being vulnerable is a struggle, especially when there are topics and struggles, we are still learning to work through."
Nicki: "How would I compete as the main woman in Jordan's life when he's used to perfection from his mom?"
As you continue to read their stories in, I Called Her Nan, you'll see and hear how their perspective of me gradually changed too... once they became a daughter-in-law.
Feel free to share your transition into the daughter-in-law or mother-in-law role in the comment section below. What did you learn after the fact, that you wish you had known sooner?
Thanks!
:) Cathy
